all about Little "Willy"

The last few days have been spent worrying about our Shih Tzu, Lily; or as she is affectionately called, "Little Willy". We are no further along in reaching a diagnosis but pain medicine is definitely helping her because she seemed closer to her old self this morning.

Lily came into our lives in a way that you should NEVER bring a pet into your lives...on a whim, from an ad in a paper. As Wally prepared for a long deployment HE felt the need that I needed a new pet. I emphatically said NO. He, after much coaxing convinced me to "just go see them". Deep down I just knew that there was no way we were going to come home empty handed.

The above photo was taken most like at 9 weeks but I'm not positive. As you can see my Dad even had a soft spot for this little "guinea pig". I admit it - Shih Tzu's are not the prettiest dogs on earth, but this Shih Tzu has the personality the size of the earth. Even Sienna took an immediate liking to her.

In fact it was Lily who picked us, not the other way around. By the time we visited the puppies, most of them had already been spoken for, Lily included. She was the smallest in the group. She had a bump on her head where apparently she decided to explore and got stuck and hit her head. She had fleas. She fell in love with me and didn't want to let go. We didn't have any intention of taking a puppy home, and payday was 2 days away, so I said we would think about it and come back. The lady insisted that this puppy was ours. She said there was a family who wanted this puppy but she just knew this one was ours. She insisted we take this little puppy home without even paying her! I told her I would write a post-dated cheque and she told us to come back in a few days and pay her then so we could tell her how our the little girl was doing. And that's the story of how Lily came into our lives.

LILY - LI for Lisa - LY for Wally - not Lily as in the flower, although she is our beautiful little flower.

She is a high maintenance kind of girl! When she was small I groomed her daily and eventually grew her hair out until it dragged on the ground. She was beautifully groomed professionally every 4 weeks, until somewhere along the way (when my groomer left the business), I shook my head and decided I was a little crazy to be "doing my dogs hair" every day with coloured ribbons and elastics.

Lily is the type of dog that NEEDS attention. If there is a group of people in a room and they're not talking about her or playing with her she will begin her "notice me" tactics. This dog is good! She can even fake yawn!

She loves to run around and flap her ears in the wind.

...and she really loves to get down and dirty!

After a little rolling in the mud she likes to play in the water and have a drink.

...and she will always be found nearby either laying on her "babies" or chewing a bone.

Just a few tidbits about our Lily who we just happen to call Little Willy. I'm convinced she will be fine, but it sure is difficult trying to find out what ails a dog who can show you she isn't well, but can't tell you exactly what's wrong.

And to Tim and all your loved ones - nothing but good thoughts and best wishes for a speedy recovery!
