Yesterday we (meaning he) received a serious surprise in the mail. It was one of those very rare times when you go to the mail box and there is a card stating you have a parcel to pick up at the Post Office and you have no idea what it is. I called Wally right away but he wasn’t available so it gave me plenty of opportunity to imagine “just what could this be”.
As I walked in to the Post Office with my notification in hand the excitement mounted. I passed the card to the lady and waited in excited anticipation. There it was. Taped as no one can tape. I knew then, that our serious surprise came from Labrador City. You see, my darling inlaws can put together a package like you’ve never seen. The beauty is in the taping. A sight indeed.
I waited until almost 7pm to find out what was inside this package. As Wally and I looked at each other with not a clue of its contents I say “are you sure we didn’t miss something? Is there an occasion that I forgot?” He shakes his head and continues on as a skilled scissor operator. When the gift is finally free of its package we look at a large box that is easily interpreted as a jewelry box. Again, we look at each other with the questioning look of “I have no idea what this is about”. As Wally opens it we see a gorgeous watch. It looks like Wally’s Dad’s watch he received from the IOC (the mine). We immediately question if it is indeed his Dad’s watch (it was a new watch we later found out). The emotion is clear on Wally’s face. It’s a beautiful sight. I prompt him to open the card so we can find out why his parents have bestowed such a beautiful and meaningful gift. And, there it is….in the card, the congratulations their son so deserves. This gift is in celebration of Wally’s promotion to Petty Officer 2nd Class. They got it. They understood that this promotion was a dream that at one time Wally wasn’t sure he would achieve. Wally will wear this watch on his promotion day and I will be there watching, standing proud, and soaking it all in.

Good things, indeed, come to those who wait.
