Birthday Happenings

I picked up Wally for his night out around 5pm yesterday for his “surprise” evening out. He knew we would be meeting up with our friends Gary & Sue for a meat & potatoes kind of meal at the Keg, but had no clue where we were going after…well, he thought he had a clue. When I arrived he was in a dress shirt & leather jacket so I quickly guessed he was thinking I was going to take him to see a play. Get real! If I did that, it would be pretty lame of me now wouldn’t it. Not that theatre isn’t a good gift, mind you. It’s just that the theatre is my thing that he just happens to come along for the ride, but enjoys it just the same…your secret is out bud. Your secret is out.

Dinner was predictable but good. Gary & Sue’s artistic abilities were outstanding, and their generous birthday gift will be spent on something special.

Really guys…this cracks me up!

Anyway, I decided to take him to the Casino for the Classic Albums show which happened to be Led Zeppelin this time around. I thought I’d hate it. I hoped he would like it. In the end we both thought it was pretty damn good, and have decided we’ll take in the “Eagles” in the New Year. Just too bad Wally is spending his day today repelling down the sides of containers, otherwise we could have really made a night of it.

Today I am attempting to bake Wally’s birthday cake…yes, for those of you who know me, I said bake…His favourite is my sister Kelly’s famous carrot cake. So far the 50 min. in the oven ended up being 65 min. The cake doesn’t look anything like hers. My first attempt at removing it from a pan, that I obviously don’t know how to use, was somewhat of a disaster; but is sort of salvaged. I’m now just waiting to get through to my mother so she can hopefully provide instructions on how to remove said cake off of the base of the pan since the tube is so frick’n tall.

If I can manage to get the cake off the pan and onto the cake tray I will attempt the cream cheese icing. Have I mentioned lately how much I suck at baking? It really is laughable; but Wally is totally aware of my ineptitude, and I’m sure he will pretend that it’s the best cake he’s every had…at least until my back is turned.

EDIT: As per Mom’s instructions I went for it and flipped that sucker over and mended it on the cake stand. Once the icing is on, it’s my little secret – OK our little secret.

Happy Birthday Wally. You’re the best!
