Today is a very special day for this lady. She happens to be very important to me. Because she lives in Labrador I don't see her very often, but she will go down in my history as someone who had a significant impact on my life. This beautiful lady is my mother-in-law, Vera. I feel totally blessed to be able to say I have "two Mom's".
I've talked about Wally's and my history a lot here on the Blog, but have never written about the beginnings of our relationship. It was fast. I mean, our relationship was really fast. Six months after meeting we bought a house and moved in together. Imagine if your catholic raised "baby boy" met an older woman that he is buying a house and moving in with - not marrying; and you haven't even met her. I can't even imagine how that would feel as parents.
Our families are very different, and at first I didn't understand the phone calls that came to me from this woman I never met when Wally was on deployment. I couldn't believe it when I would receive a card from his parents on my birthday every year. I loved the fact that they acknowledged our wedding anniversary even though it wasn't what they had dreamed for their son.
I can honestly say our relationship at the beginning was a little strained....not difficult, but strained. I know both of Wally's parents, and in particular, his Mom were disappointed when we decided against a church wedding. I know they found that time difficult, but they came to our wedding and began opening their hearts to me. Over the years I have gone to Vera for advice and for comfort when needed. I have been blessed to have a mother-in-law that I truly repect and admire, and I am thankful everyday for the gift his parents have given me - a son that is generous and kind...and funny too!
Have a great day Vera! Thanks for all that you do!
